A few weeks ago, my son, daughter, a dear friend and I were headed to The Lost Kitchen, Erin French’s renowned restaurant in the little town of Freedom, Maine. Thanks to my daughter’s persistence, she was one of 10,000 callers all vying for the “golden ticket” that would secure a table at this amazing destination.
Our first stop was “The Museum” – the name of the Wine Cellar where, with Ms. French’s mother’s help, we selected the wine pairings for our dinner. Soon enough, we were seated at our table and the magic began. First with several rounds of appetizers – including amazing oysters with trout roe and dill; a charcuterie board and other goodies.
Before the first course was served, Ms. French called us all to her attention to welcome us and to explain the menu she had prepared for us. She spoke with a warm familiarity – as if we were family. And for the next several hours we were treated as such. The meal began with a cold pea soup, crab salad/basil and smoked ricotta, followed by TLK’s take on an iceberg lettuce salad, complete with bacon bits, blue velvet cheese, & a tangy buttermilk dressing. Buttered Maine hake served with heirloom tomato, new potatoes, radicchio & olives, arugula, baby chard & pea tendrils was our main dish. The dessert was a frozen custard, almond brittle, blueberries & blackberries, whipped cream & a honey drizzle. The meal was spectacular and the experience simply indescribable!
